London Canary Wharf is part of the Jemstock Estate which is the gateway
development to the Millennium Quarter on the Isle of Dogs. The estate is
planned around a central landscape courtyard, and is bounded by Canary
Wharf to north and the South Quay DLR station and track to the south.
Comprising a
15 storey, 283 bedroom hotel with a presidential suite, executive lounge,
function room, boardroom and 7 meeting rooms plus business centre, as
well as Living Well Express health club and 170 cover restaurant and a
lounge bar at ground floor level.
The existing structure
was constructed circa 1987 as suited offices but was never occupied. It
was heavily damaged by the IRA bomb in 1996 and remained a partially clad
skeleton until construction commenced in 2004.
The design builds
on the existing structure but is not dictated to by the original building
form. EPR have radically carved and extended the frame relocating cores
and readdressing the mass of the building to create a 15 storey 283 bedroom
hotel.
The design also readdresses
the public realm under the DLR track at ground floor level to create an
open an accessible environment to the Hotel.
The site presented
a complex range of acoustic issues which required the team to develop
the design and construction techniques to work within the constraints
of the existing structure and alleviate impact of the DLR low frequency
noise on the bedrooms and public spaces.
The Northern building
in the estate is 142 contemporary apartments & 10 penthouses by EPR
for Capital 7 Provident. EPR
are currently undertaking a 100,000 sq ft office building overlooking
South Quay Square to complete the estate.
Client: Capital &
Provident Management Limited.
