This commission involved
the provision of full architectural and planning services for a 269,000
sq ft (25,000 sq m) development which involved total reconstruction behind
retained facades.
The design was based
upon the replacement of three internal lightwells with a single linear
atrium. Floor widths and spacings were entirely re-configured to provide
the maximum clear uninterrupted floor space, enabling a combination of
cellular and open plan space. Lifts were placed within the atrium to facilitate
ease of access to all parts of the building.
Particular emphasis
was placed on achieving the high quality working environment needed by
Amerada Hess to satisfy the needs of its young, highly skilled engineering
and business development staff.
The project stages
included: pre-construction period from first briefing to site start -
six months; demolition period, while retaining facade - three months;
construction period - 16 months.
