First
Avenue House is owned by the Court Service and comprises 19
Family Division courts and a Supercourt - the biggest courtroom
in Britain.
The project involved full refurbishment of the 147,412 sq
ft (13,700 sq m) building, including planning application,
interior design, space planning and furniture design.
The
project was completed within budget and on time, despite having
a very tight completion date. The courts were relocated from
Somerset House - the first time in 150 years that this group
of courts had been relocated.
The design solution balanced the dignity of the law with a
non-imposing environment, using a modern approach which combined
lightness and simplicity of space.
