Cecil Elsom, the founding
partner of EPR died on Monday 3rd April '06 aged 94 following a
short illness.
Born of Latvian
parents, Cecil qualified in the late 1930’s and met early
success, winning a competition for Welwyn Garden City Town Hall.
His career was interrupted by the Second World War, from which he
returned with the rank of captain.
It was in 1947
that he set up the practice which was to become EPR. Cecil was one
of a group of charismatic architects whose careers flourished in
the development boom of the 1950’s. It was in this period
that he formed a close association with Max, later Lord Rayne, the
founder of London Merchant Securities with whom we are still working
today, notably on the Tottenham Court Road project, being led by
Peter Fishwick and his team.
Cecil was joined
in the late 50’s by Bill Pack and Alan Roberts, and as Elsom
Pack and Roberts created a thriving practice which in the mid 90’s
was renamed as EPR.
