We were invited to take part in an international competition to design a new five-star hotel and serviced apartment complex next to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor Old Town in Montenegro. Kotor Bay sits at the foot of the Limestone Mountains next to the 4.5km-long walls of the Old Town both of which evoke a strong sense of awe and history.
The Old Town itself was built between the 12th and 14th centuries in the shelter of the dominant and overhanging mountains at the head of the bay. Today, the medieval street pattern and Venetian and Byzantine influenced stone architecture is well preserved. It has long been a popular tourist destination and in more recent times, a haven for large cruise liners that swamp the surrounding buildings with their high-gloss modernity.
