The brief required an extension of the retail trading floors into an adjoining building with a seamless transition between the two buildings. There were level differences between the two buildings so a radical solution was to demolish the late Victorian building retaining all the bricks and stone dressings which were meticulously numbered. The building was then rebuilt with a higher ground-floor level so that windows and new floors aligned with the existing department store. A new grand staircase was also incorporated.
