Artisan model for Abbot Hall art gallery

EPR was recently commissioned by Judith Clark Studio to create an architectural model for ‘Lady Anne Clifford: Building Attributes’ — a pop-up exhibition at Abbot Hall, one of the UK’s leading art galleries.

The brief was to reimagine the castles of Brough, Skipton, Pendragon and the Countess Pillar near Brougham, drawing inspiration from Anne Clifford’s fight to reclaim her inherited estates and her diary entries that reflect her deep connection with architectural history.

Working from designs by Ines Omvik, an architecture student at Oslo School of Architecture and Design, EPR’s in-house modelmaker used Rhino software to translate her drawings into a 1:50 scale model. Inspired by artist Do Ho Suh’s translucent, material-wrapped wireframe buildings, the model was constructed from laser-cut clear acrylic, invisibly supported to give the illusion of floating rooms, each seamlessly connected through doorways. A calico-like fabric was then hand-applied to each frame edge, giving the model a translucent, ethereal quality that plays with light and space.
